Computer Technology Sylabus
Starting to teach Computers in your school? Below is a typical sylabus that I created. Hello and Welcome: My name is John Nystrom; I am the computer teacher here at Pioneer Middle School. In this class students will become familiar with Computer Basics in areas of “Microsoft Office” which includes Word, Power Point, Publisher, and Excel. Other areas which will be covered will be the internet and how it can be used for research and Microsoft Movie Maker. I see this class as an extension to a student’s core class. This will cause student learning to increase in a given subject area and makes the lessons more fun. I look forward to meeting or talking with you the parent. Bellow is a short grading scale that I will be using for this class. If you have any questions please feel free to email me at the address listed above or call me at (253) 983-2400. Please fill out the last page for me to safely file away for my own reference. Grading Scale (possible 100%) A = 94-100% B- = 80-82% D = 60-69% A- = 90-93% C+ = 76-79% F = less then 60% B+ = 86-89% C = 73-75% B = 83-85% C- = 70-72% Projects Students will be creating at least 2 projects each quarter. The Project will include (but not limited to) these assignments: a written paper, a Power Point Presentation, a Publication (newsletter or brochure) and a spreadsheet. Rubrics for all assignments in the projects will be available to the student to print out and bring home. Outlines of the grading scale and expectations will also be available to the students. ***Projects will contain the majority of the points for a student’s grade. Lessons The beginning of each lesson will be dedicated to Keyboarding skills. (Approx 10-15min). Following the keyboarding skills students will be instructed on new (possibly review) tools to use in certain programs. The remainder of the lesson will be dedicated to research and production of their project. Internet Research Students will be expected to use good judgment when using the districts internet provider. If they decide not to use the computers in an educational light then consequences might occur. Usually a warning will be given for the first infraction after that students will be on a progressive discipline plan. The district does take every effort to filter what can be accessed. If you would like more information please let me know. *Depending on the web-site a letter might be sent home after the first warning. Homework Homework will not be generally given for this class. Yet, if a student feels they are falling behind they may opt. to work at home on their projects. Email and Chat Rooms Email and Chat Rooms are PROHIBITED and filtered out in my Computer Classroom. However if a student is found in one of these sites their parents will be notified and the student will not be able to use the internet (in my classroom) for 1 full week. If you have any questions or concerns please email me so that I can get back to you quickly.
