Gibson Guitar Factory

The Gibson Guitar Factory

The Gibson Guitar Factory is located in Memphis Tennessee. Gibson also has shops in Nashville and Bozeman Montana. Gibson moved from Kalamazoo to Nashville between the years of 1974 to 1984. Here they set up a Factory and a Showcase, across the street is the Memphis Rock'N Soul museum.

The Gibson Factory employees roughly 75 people and produces approximately 45 guitars a day. The Memphis factory makes mostly ES "Electric Spanish" models. The Nashville factory produces the solid body electrics like the Les Paul, SG, Flying Vs and the explorers. Acoustic guitars are primarily made at the Bozeman factory

When making guitars Gibson will come across substandard guitars. These guitar bodies are destroyed and will not see the light of day. In the past they sold these substandard issues but not anymore.

At the factory you can take tours. These tours allow outside people to see what goes into making a fine Gibson Guitar.

During the tour you get to see:

The lightwood/scrap room (this is exactly what it sounds like..the graveyard for bad wood).
The binding process employees show people how the neck is aligned and what type of finishing wood is used.
** note ** Along the production line each employee acts as a control monitor. If a guitar is repairable at this point they will repair the problem if not...off to the scrap room.

3. After the alignment and finishing wood is applied the frets are pressed on, serial numbers are fixed and the pick up holes, control box and bridge areas are routed by a computer operated machine (the only use of a computer through the guitar making process).

4. Next the guitar will move on to the painting, lacquer and buffing station for the final touches on the looks.

5. The last area that the Gibson's will move through is the assembly, electronics and testing area. It is here that the guitars will get their finishing items like the pick guards, knobs and any wiring left and the guitar is finally played to check for tone.

Well that's the Memphis Gibson Factory in a nutshell. If you get a chance check it out!!!!
