The Les Paul Story
The Les Paul Story Who is Les Paul and why did he start with Gibson? That was a question I had when I first started thinking about when I was starting to dream about playing a Gibson guitar. Les Paul was born as Lester William Polsfuss on June 9th 1915 in Waukesha, WI. Les Paul is actually his stage name. He first got interested in music when he was 8 years old, he played the harmonica first then the piano, attempted the banjo then settled for the guitar at the age of 13 and never went back. By the age of 17 he was playing self professionally for country western bands. In the 30s Les Paul played Jazz guitar at a Chicago radio station. At this time he created the "Log" which was nothing more then a 4 by 4 that was hollowed out with pick ups added. He added an Epiphone body to make it look a bit nicer. This solved the major problem of Feedback that the older guitars had and made playing guitar a bit clearer in sound. In 1941 Les Paul designed one of the first solid body electric guitars. Gibson signed him to a contract for the design. The contract also stated that Les Paul only play Gibson guitars in public and if photographed he had to be pictured with the Les Paul Gibson as well. In 1961 Gibson changed the design of the Les Paul design. Les hated the design when he saw the guitar hanging in the store window, he had no idea that Gibson did this until that moment. He then told Gibson to take his name off the design. The guitar was later named the SG. This issue and other rumors about his divorce made him stop his relationship with Gibson guitars. But like all good love affairs Les Paul joined Gibson again and still endorses his design. Epiphone also carries his design but has a cheaper build.
